UAE Revamps Trademark Fee Structure to Boost SME Growth and IP Protection

4 Min Read

In a significant move to enhance its intellectual property framework, the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has announced a new schedule of fees for its trademark services. The decision, aimed at strengthening the UAE’s position as a global business hub, introduces streamlined processes and substantial fee reductions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and People of Determination.

A Response to Surging Trademark Demand

The policy update comes as the UAE experiences a remarkable surge in intellectual property activity. H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, highlighted that the Ministry registered 19,957 national and international trademarks in the first half of 2025, a staggering 129% growth compared to the 8,711 registered in the same period in 2024. This growth underscores the increasing confidence in the UAE’s business environment and the critical need for an advanced IP infrastructure.

“The Cabinet’s decision on the fees for trademark services provided by the Ministry represents an important step in enhancing the UAE’s attractiveness to international investors, attracting global companies, and supporting SME owners,” stated H.E. Bin Touq.

Streamlining IP with One-Day Examination and New Services

A key feature of the new structure is the introduction of a one-day trademark examination service for a fee of AED 2,250, designed to significantly expedite the registration process for businesses. This initiative is part of a broader effort to digitize and accelerate IP services, aligning with the country’s ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision.

The decision establishes fees for 28 distinct trademark services, including seven new offerings such as the registration of a geographical indication (AED 6,500) and grievance against trademark registration refusal (AED 5,000). Furthermore, fees for four services related to trademark renewals have been consolidated to simplify the process for brand owners.

Significant Fee Reductions for SMEs and People of Determination

To directly support the startup ecosystem, the new regulations offer a 50% fee reduction on all trademark services for members of the National Programme for Small and Medium Enterprises.

This initiative complements the national campaign ‘The Emirates: The Startup Capital of the World’ by lowering barriers to entry for local entrepreneurs seeking to protect their brands. In a further commitment to inclusivity, the decision grants a full exemption on all trademark fees for People of Determination, empowering them to establish and grow their businesses within a supportive and accessible framework.
