Abu Dhabi-based research institute ADIA Lab has significantly bolstered its scientific leadership by appointing two Nobel Prize winners, Professor Robert F. Engle and Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, to its Advisory Board. This strategic move expands the board to 12 globally recognised experts, reinforcing the UAE’s position as an emerging hub for advanced research in data and computational sciences.
A Powerhouse Duo in Economics and Physics
The new appointments bring unparalleled expertise from two distinct but critical scientific fields. Professor Robert F. Engle, the 2003 Nobel Memorial Prize winner in Economic Sciences, is celebrated for his pioneering work in analysing economic time series, particularly the ARCH model which revolutionised financial econometrics and risk management. Currently a Professor Emeritus at New York University’s Stern School of Business, his recent research focuses on climate risk, an area of key interest for the region.
Joining him is Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, who was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for the groundbreaking discovery of graphene. His work with the thinnest and strongest material ever identified has unlocked new frontiers in materials science, electronics, and nanotechnology. Professor Novoselov currently serves as the Director of the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials at the National University of Singapore and is a prolific author with over 600 peer-reviewed publications.
Assembling a Board of Scientific Titans
The addition of Professors Engle and Novoselov elevates an already formidable Advisory Board tasked with guiding ADIA Lab’s research priorities. The board now collectively holds four Nobel Prizes, two ACM Turing Awards, and an ACM Gordon Bell Prize, among other prestigious honours. Its members include leading academics and scientists from world-renowned institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley, underscoring ADIA Lab’s commitment to fostering a world-class research environment in the heart of Abu Dhabi.
