Abu Dhabi’s growing stature as a global hub for artificial intelligence and innovation was the central theme of a recent discussion co-hosted by Dartmouth55 Advisory and Hub71, the capital’s global tech ecosystem. The event gathered prominent policymakers, researchers, and technology leaders to explore how emerging technologies are shaping the future.
The dialogue focused on the critical importance of long-term vision, strategic collaboration, and responsible development as AI integration accelerates across key sectors, including energy, healthcare, and public services.
A Call for Long-Term Commitment
Former UK Prime Minister Lord David Cameron, in an interview with Emily Sheffield, founder of Dartmouth55, emphasized the need for unwavering commitment to foster innovation as technology continues its transformative impact on economies and societies.
“If you want something to succeed, you have to want it more than anything else and be prepared to take difficult decisions,” he remarked, drawing on his experience supporting the UK’s tech ecosystem during his tenure.
Collaboration and Ambition The Core of Abu Dhabi’s Strategy
Prof Phil Hart, Head of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Research Centre at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), described Abu Dhabi as a city defined by its scale and ambition. He stressed that its true competitive advantage lies in its collaborative spirit and talented people.
According to Prof Hart, the UAE’s clear and proactive approach to artificial intelligence has positioned it ahead of many global peers, continuing to attract top international technology talent to the capital.
Fostering Responsible and Commercial AI
A significant part of the discussion revolved around developing advanced technologies responsibly and efficiently amidst rapid global AI adoption. Abu Dhabi’s innovation ecosystem, featuring platforms like Hub71, was highlighted for its crucial role in bridging the gap between research, capital, and startups to successfully commercialize cutting-edge technologies.
TII, Abu Dhabi’s applied research arm, was also recognized for its impactful work in turning research into practical applications across diverse fields such as robotics, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and energy.
Tackling AI’s Energy Challenge
Speakers also addressed the growing importance of energy efficiency as AI systems expand. While acknowledging that data centres are energy-intensive, the discussion pointed out that AI itself can be a powerful tool for improving how energy is produced, managed, and consumed, ultimately supporting more sustainable systems as innovation advances.
