UAE’s Climate Ministry Taps IBM For AI-Powered Environmental Management

3 Min Read

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) has announced a strategic partnership with global technology leader IBM to pioneer AI-driven systems aimed at enhancing the nation’s environmental management and sustainability frameworks. The collaboration underscores the UAE’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to address complex environmental challenges and achieve its long-term strategic goals.

A Strategic Partnership Forged at GITEX Global

The landmark agreement was formalized during GITEX Global 2025 in Dubai, a premier event for the region’s technology sector. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment. Amal Abdulrahim, Assistant Undersecretary for Support Services and Chief AI and Innovation Officer, signed on behalf of MoCCAE, while Shukri Eid, General Manager for the Gulf, Levant, and Pakistan, represented IBM. This public-private collaboration is set to utilize IBM’s global expertise in developing AI applications focused on sustainability to support the UAE’s environmental objectives.

Automating Compliance for Endangered Species Protection

A cornerstone of the partnership is the development of an intelligent verification platform for CITES certificates. These certificates are crucial for regulating the international trade of endangered species as mandated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The new AI-powered system will automate the data entry and validation processes for both CITES and phytosanitary certifications, significantly reducing administrative burdens and the potential for human error. This automation aims to deliver faster, more accurate, and more efficient compliance, strengthening the UAE’s role in global biodiversity protection.

Aligning with National Sustainability Goals

This initiative is a critical component of the UAE’s broader strategic ambitions, including Vision 2031 and the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative. By integrating AI into its environmental governance, the ministry is modernizing its regulatory oversight and enhancing its capacity for data-driven decision-making. The partnership with IBM is a clear example of how the UAE is leveraging responsible innovation and cross-sector collaboration to build a sustainable future and fortify its leadership in environmental stewardship.
