The acquisition of Deliveroo UAE by global logistics platform DoorDash has been successfully completed, officially bringing the UAE-based delivery service under the ownership of the US giant. The move marks a significant consolidation in the region’s competitive on-demand delivery market.
Continuity for Customers, Merchants, and Riders
In an open letter addressing the acquisition, DoorDash Co-Founder and CEO Tony Xu emphasized continuity, stating that “the Deliveroo app and products you know and love aren’t going anywhere.” Xu outlined commitments to all sides of the platform, promising to make the experience for its seven million active customers “even faster, smarter, and more delightful.” For the network of 178,000 merchants, DoorDash plans to introduce more tools to help them thrive, while the 130,000 riders are assured of continued support to make delivering safer and more secure.
New Leadership Structure
As part of the integration, Wolt Co-Founder Miki Kuusi will take on the role of CEO of Deliveroo, in addition to his current position as Head of International at DoorDash. Kuusi, who will relocate to London, expressed his admiration for the brand and team built by Deliveroo’s founder, Will Shu. He stated, “I couldn’t be more excited to learn from each other as we take our shared mission to the next level.”
A New Chapter for MENA’s Delivery Scene
While the announcement focuses on the UAE, the acquisition has broader implications for the region, as Deliveroo also operates in Kuwait and Qatar. By combining DoorDash’s global technology and scale with Deliveroo’s established local presence and brand recognition, the deal is set to intensify competition and potentially spur further innovation within the MENA food and grocery delivery sector.
