UAE’s TII Launches Open-Source Benchmark to Advance Arabic STEM AI

4 Min Read

Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has unveiled a significant new tool for the artificial intelligence community, releasing the ASCEND benchmark to rigorously evaluate Large Language Models (LLMs) on their Arabic-language capabilities in STEM subjects. This open-source initiative aims to catalyze development and improve the performance of AI systems tailored for the region’s scientific and educational needs.

Introducing the ASCEND Benchmark

The new benchmark, named ASCEND (Arabic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), is a meticulously curated dataset designed to test the reasoning and knowledge of LLMs in complex technical domains. It provides a standardized framework for developers and researchers to measure and compare the performance of various models, ensuring a more accurate assessment of their true capabilities in Arabic.

Addressing a Critical Gap in Arabic AI

A major hurdle in developing sophisticated Arabic AI has been the scarcity of high-quality, specialized data for training and evaluation. While English has a wealth of benchmarks, the Arabic digital landscape has lagged, particularly in technical fields. ASCEND directly confronts this challenge by providing a robust, domain-specific tool that moves beyond general language proficiency to test deep subject matter expertise.

Built by Experts for a Regional Context

To ensure its relevance and difficulty, the ASCEND benchmark was developed by Arabic-speaking STEM experts. The dataset comprises over 5,000 challenging multiple-choice questions sourced from high-school and university-level examinations across the MENA region. This approach guarantees that the benchmark reflects the specific curricula, terminology, and educational standards of the Arab world, making it a truly authentic evaluation tool.

Driving Open-Source Innovation

This release continues TII’s commitment to fostering an open and collaborative AI ecosystem, following its successful open-sourcing of the Falcon series of LLMs. By making ASCEND publicly available, TII empowers the global research community to build upon its work, refine Arabic LLMs, and ultimately accelerate innovation across the region. Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei, Executive Director of the AI Cross-Centre Unit at TII, emphasized that this initiative will enable the creation of more accurate and reliable Arabic AI models.

About TII

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is the applied research pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). TII operates as a pioneering global research and development center, focusing on applied research and new-age technology capabilities. The institute has several dedicated research centers in areas including quantum, autonomous robotics, cryptography, advanced materials, digital security, directed energy, and secure systems.

Looking Ahead

The launch of ASCEND is a pivotal step towards enhancing the sophistication of AI in the Arab world. By providing a reliable benchmark, TII is not only setting a new standard for excellence but also paving the way for the development of advanced AI applications in education, scientific research, and industry. This will likely spur further innovation, encouraging developers to create more powerful and contextually aware AI tools that can effectively serve the 400 million Arabic speakers globally.
