Vodafone Egypt and Tunisie Telecom Push Mobile Payments Growth Across North Africa

3 Min Read

Mobile financial services are accelerating across North Africa as major telecom operators deploy new strategies to capture a larger share of the digital economy. In a dual move signaling regional market growth, Vodafone Egypt and Tunisie Telecom announced separate initiatives designed to broaden access to mobile payments and cross-border remittances.

Quick Facts

  • Egypt’s remittances jumped 29.6% to $22.1 billion.

  • Vodafone Cash holds 55% of Egypt’s mobile wallet market.

  • Tunisie Telecom debuts the Kashy mobile payment application.

Capturing Egypt’s Remittance Boom

To capitalize on the growing volume of international money transfers, Vodafone Egypt formed a strategic partnership with global remittance platform TapTap Send. This integration allows Egyptian expatriates in more than 30 countries to route funds directly into Vodafone Cash wallets.

By bypassing traditional banking channels, the service provides a faster and more accessible channel for incoming capital. The partnership aligns with a significant upward trend in national remittance flows.

According to the Central Bank of Egypt, remittances surged by 29.6% during the first half of FY2025/2026, reaching $22.1 billion—up from $17.1 billion during the same period last year.

Vodafone Cash continues to control the majority of the domestic sector. As of Q2 2025, the platform accounts for 55% of all active mobile wallets in Egypt, while processing 78% of total transactions and 81% of the overall transaction value.

Activating Digital Financial Services in Tunisia

In a parallel move to digitize local financial interactions, Tunisie Telecom partnered with Viamobile to introduce a new mobile payment application named Kashy.

The platform provides users with essential financial tools, enabling them to transfer funds, receive payments, top up mobile balances, and execute cash withdrawals. Tunisie Telecom plans to roll out the service initially across approximately 30 retail locations nationwide.

While Tunisia’s digital financial ecosystem is still maturing, this launch highlights a broader continental push to bypass low traditional banking penetration through high mobile phone adoption. Industry analysts project that the digital payments economy across Africa will hit $1.5 trillion by 2030.
