Meta-owned WhatsApp has rolled out two significant updates, introducing a dedicated app for the Apple Watch and simplifying chat backup security with passkeys. These enhancements aim to expand the platform’s accessibility while reinforcing its commitment to user privacy and data protection.
A Seamless Experience Comes to the Apple Watch
WhatsApp has officially launched its first native app for the Apple Watch, allowing users to manage communications directly from their wrist. This new app eliminates the need to constantly reach for an iPhone for basic interactions.
Available for Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or newer, the app enables users to read and respond to full messages, view images and stickers, and react with emojis. It also introduces the ability to see incoming call notifications and record and send voice messages, creating a more comprehensive and convenient messaging experience on the go. All communications on the watch remain protected by the platform’s signature end-to-end encryption.
Strengthening Security with Passkey Backups
In a parallel move to bolster security, WhatsApp is replacing traditional passwords and complex 64-digit encryption keys for chat backups. The new system allows users to secure their backup data using their device’s built-in biometric authenticators—such as a fingerprint or face scan—or their device screen lock code.
This update streamlines the process of securing and restoring chat history, photos, and voice notes when switching devices, making robust encryption more accessible and intuitive for all users. The feature will be rolled out gradually in the coming weeks and can be activated under Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup.
What This Means for MENA Users
For the highly connected and tech-savvy population across the MENA region, these updates are particularly relevant. With high smartphone and wearable technology adoption rates, especially in the GCC, the native Apple Watch app offers a new level of convenience for both personal and business communication.
Furthermore, as WhatsApp is increasingly used for business transactions, customer service, and sensitive conversations in the region, the simplified passkey-encrypted backups provide a critical layer of security. This move addresses the growing demand for user-friendly privacy tools, ensuring that valuable chat data remains protected against unauthorized access, a key concern for founders, professionals, and everyday users alike.
