Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research pillar of the Advanced Technology Research Council, has launched a new 2-micrometer (µm) high-power fiber laser system. Developed by TII’s Directed Energy Research Center, the Thulium-based laser is designed to bring unprecedented precision, efficiency, and safety to a range of medical and industrial applications.
Advancing Precision in Medicine
The new laser system holds significant promise for the medical field, particularly in minimally invasive surgery. Its specific wavelength is optimized for water-rich materials, enabling highly controlled and clean tissue ablation with minimal collateral damage. Early evaluations have identified potential breakthrough applications in urology, including advanced treatments for urinary stones and prostate surgery, positioning the technology as a key component for next-generation surgical tools.
Strategic Partnership for Commercialization
To fast-track the laser’s journey from the lab to clinical use, TII has partnered with LIMA Photonics, a German MedTech startup. LIMA Photonics will leverage its expertise in medical device design, regulatory compliance, and commercialization to help integrate the technology into the healthcare market. “At TII, we’re developing high-performance laser systems designed for real-world impact,” said Dr. Felix Vega, Chief Researcher at TII’s Directed Energy Research Center. “Through our collaboration with LIMA Photonics, we’re aligning technical innovation with medical applications.”
