Abu Dhabi’s streets are set to feature a new generation of autonomous transport, as the emirate plans to roll out Urbanloop driverless pods by the end of 2025. According to Sebastian Mangeant, CEO of Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT), the innovative system is currently undergoing testing on Reem Island and is being specifically adapted to the UAE’s climate of high heat and dust.
A Non-Stop Transit Solution
Unlike traditional metro systems, Urbanloop is designed to offer a direct, on-demand service. The system operates on two parallel tracks, allowing individual pods to bypass all intermediate stations and travel straight to the passenger’s selected destination. This feature aims to significantly reduce travel time and decongest the city. The pods, which are both bicycle- and wheelchair-friendly, will be available in various sizes with a capacity for up to 10 passengers.
From Paris Olympics to UAE’s Climate
The Urbanloop system is not entirely new to the world stage. It was successfully implemented during the Paris Olympics last year, where it transported over 30,000 passengers along a 2-kilometre route. The technology is now being tailored for Abu Dhabi’s unique environment. While the pods are capable of reaching speeds up to 50kmph, a representative at the Global Rail conference noted they are currently being tested at approximately 20kmph for use in the UAE’s urban traffic.
Driving Abu Dhabi’s Car-Light Future
The introduction of Urbanloop is a key component of Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to create a “car-light future.” Officials envision the pods serving as a highly efficient first- and last-mile solution, connecting commuters with larger transport networks like Etihad Rail. The goal is to make public transport more convenient, comfortable, and seamlessly connected, thereby incentivizing residents to reduce their reliance on private vehicles and embrace shared mobility models.
