The Syrian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has announced the formation of a dedicated working group aimed at empowering women within the nation’s technology sector. The initiative was launched following a high-level consultative meeting chaired by Minister Abd al-Salam Haikal, bringing together 26 prominent women leaders from entrepreneurship, modern technology, academia, and executive management in the private sector.

A Strategic Push for Digital Inclusion

The meeting served as a platform to discuss key challenges and opportunities for women in Syria’s growing digital landscape. Minister Haikal emphasized that the ministry has placed female empowerment at the forefront of its priorities, stating the goal is to ensure women play an active and influential role in shaping the future of Syria’s digital economy, moving beyond symbolic gestures. The newly formed working group will be responsible for coordinating national efforts and proposing targeted programs that address the specific needs of women in the tech industry.

Addressing Key Ecosystem Challenges

Attendees identified several critical hurdles facing women in technology and entrepreneurship. Key discussion points included the need to better align university education with the demands of the tech job market, streamlining the process for establishing startups, and enhancing the role of incubators and accelerators in supporting student and women-led ventures. The group aims to develop practical solutions to these systemic issues.

Building a National Platform for Growth

According to Ahmed Sufyan Bayram, the ministry’s advisor for innovation and entrepreneurship, the working group will function as a national platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and capacity building. The participants agreed to collaborate on a strategic roadmap designed to support women-led startups by connecting them with crucial funding opportunities and facilitating local and international partnerships. This effort is a core component of the broader national entrepreneurship agenda being adopted by the ministry.
