The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), in a strategic partnership with G42-owned big data analytics company Presight, has officially launched the brand identity and development roadmap for its pioneering AI platform, AD.WE. The announcement was a key highlight at GITEX Global 2025, signaling a major step in the emirate’s commitment to integrating advanced technology into its critical infrastructure.
A New Era for Utility Management
AD.WE is a first-of-its-kind AI-powered platform designed to revolutionize the management of Abu Dhabi’s energy and water resources. By unifying billions of live and historical grid records within a secure, UAE-hosted cloud, the platform provides operators with a single, comprehensive view of the entire utility network. Leveraging real-time artificial intelligence, AD.WE can identify efficiency opportunities, predict demand, and optimize resource allocation across the emirate. The platform’s initial use cases, including farm irrigation optimization and intelligent leak detection, have already demonstrated the potential to reduce water and electricity consumption by up to 10%.
Significant Sustainability Impact
Operating entirely on sustainable, carbon-free electricity, AD.WE is positioned to deliver substantial environmental and financial benefits. The platform aims to enable savings of up to 30% in water and 20% in energy, translating to over AED 100 million in financial savings. Once fully implemented, projections estimate that by 2035, AD.WE will save 160 million cubic meters of water annually—equivalent to over 64,000 Olympic swimming pools—and 1.9 TWh of electricity per year, enough to power more than 37,000 homes. These ambitious targets directly support the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Energy & Water Efficiency Strategy 2030.
Phased Rollout and Future Vision
The DoE unveiled a clear three-phase development journey for the platform to ensure its scalability and long-term success. The roadmap is structured to progressively enhance the platform’s capabilities and integration across the utilities sector.
- Phase One (2025): Focuses on capability verification to establish and validate the core functionalities of the platform.
- Phase Two (2025–26): Involves a full rollout, expanding integration beyond electricity and water to incorporate district cooling and petroleum products.
- Phase Three (by GITEX 2026): Aims for advanced AI integration, introducing agentic AI and next-generation use cases to drive further innovation and efficiency.
