Meta has announced the introduction of new scam detection features for its popular messaging platforms, WhatsApp and Messenger. The move is part of a broader initiative by the tech giant to combat online fraud, with a specific focus on protecting older, more vulnerable users from sophisticated scams.
New Safety Features Unveiled
On WhatsApp, users will now see a prominent warning when they attempt to share their screen during a video call with an unknown contact. Meta identified this as a common tactic used by scammers to trick individuals into revealing sensitive financial information, such as bank details or verification codes.
Messenger is also receiving an upgrade with a more advanced scam detection system. The platform will now test techniques to analyze inbound messages for suspicious characteristics. If a message is flagged, a warning will appear, advising the user to “be cautious, you could be at risk of losing money.” The alert will also list common scam methods, such as fraudulent work-from-home offers, and prompt the user to either block or report the suspicious account.
A Proactive Stance Against Scammers
These new features are part of a larger crackdown on fraudulent activity across Meta’s platforms. The company reported that it detected and disrupted approximately 8 million accounts involved in scam operations during the first half of 2025. In addition, it took action against over 21,000 Facebook Pages and accounts that were impersonating customer support services to deceive users. Furthering its commitment, Meta has joined the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center, a nonprofit that unites law enforcement with major corporations to combat fraud targeting older adults.
MENA’s Connection to Global Scams
The initiative holds particular relevance for the MENA region. In its report, Meta noted that some of the disrupted scam centers were located in areas including the United Arab Emirates, alongside other countries in Southeast Asia. This highlights the global nature of these fraudulent networks and underscores the importance of enhanced security for users in the region. With WhatsApp being one of the most dominant communication tools across MENA for both personal and business use, these new protective layers offer a crucial defense against scams that can have devastating financial and personal consequences.
