EDGE Group And Anduril Launch Joint Venture For AI Combat Drone Production in UAE

3 Min Read

In a landmark move solidifying the UAE’s position as a regional hub for advanced technology, Abu Dhabi’s EDGE Group has announced a joint venture with American high-tech defence developer Anduril Industries. The partnership will establish a new facility in Abu Dhabi dedicated to designing and producing AI-powered autonomous drones.

This collaboration marks a significant step in advancing the Emirates’ domestic defence manufacturing capabilities and integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence into next-generation aerial systems.

A New Era of Autonomous Defence Systems

The joint venture will initially focus on developing and producing a new generation of combat-ready drones called Omen. A 50,000-square-foot research and development centre will be established in Abu Dhabi to house the project, with the UAE government signalling strong support by committing to acquire the first 50 units.

The Omen drone is designed to be sleek and lightweight, combining the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) ability of a helicopter with the extended range and speed of a fixed-wing airplane. This versatility enables deployment in complex terrains for missions ranging from maritime patrols and border security to disaster relief.

“This is about disrupting current maritime patrol and special mission aircraft — much bigger systems. That’s what we’re going after,” said Shane Arnott, Anduril’s Senior Vice-President.

Integrating Cutting-Edge AI

A core component of the agreement gives EDGE Group access to Anduril’s sophisticated Lattice AI operating system. This advanced software platform allows multiple autonomous aircraft to coordinate missions in real-time through a 3D command-and-control network.

The AI-driven architecture is engineered to provide military operators with an unprecedented level of situational awareness and battlefield coordination, setting the stage to reshape future air combat strategies.

Strategic Investment and Production Timeline

The Omen project is the first of several advanced systems expected to emerge from the partnership. EDGE is investing nearly $200 million into the programme, which builds upon Anduril’s prior commitment of $850 million in technology development.

Production is scheduled to commence by 2028, with the first prototypes slated for testing within the UAE next year. The collaboration follows the new US-UAE defence partnership aimed at promoting joint capability development between the two nations.
