The UAE Government has announced a significant restructuring of its media sector with the establishment of the National Media Authority. The new federal body, created by a Federal Decree-Law and affiliated with the UAE Cabinet, signals a strategic move to centralize and streamline the country’s media governance and public narrative.
A Centralized Mandate
The primary goal of the Authority is to bring all national media messaging under a single, cohesive framework. It will work to align media policies across various federal and local government entities, ensuring a unified communication strategy for the UAE’s narrative, both domestically and internationally.
Consolidation of Responsibilities
This new legislation effectively dissolves and integrates the functions of several key media bodies. The roles, responsibilities, and legal agreements previously held by the UAE Media Council, the National Media Office, and the Emirates News Agency (WAM) will now be transferred to the National Media Authority, creating a single point of governance.
Expanding Regulatory Scope
The Authority’s remit is extensive, covering the development of strategic media policies and regulations for the entire sector. Its oversight will include the licensing and setting of standards for all media activities, a mandate that extends to digital platforms and media entities operating within the UAE’s free zones, subject to Cabinet approval.
The body is also tasked with monitoring media content, managing media crises, and actively addressing the risks of misinformation and fake news in the digital age.
WAM and Global Outreach
Under the new structure, the Authority will oversee the Emirates News Agency (WAM) as the nation’s official news platform. Plans include enhancing WAM’s capabilities by building a global correspondent network, creating a comprehensive news archive, and developing training programs for national media professionals.
Further responsibilities include accrediting foreign media representatives, overseeing official media delegations, and representing the UAE in regional and international media forums.
