Qatar Drives into the Future with Mowasalat’s Autonomous Robotaxi Launch

4 Min Read

The State of Qatar has taken a significant leap into the future of urban mobility with the launch of an autonomous Robotaxi service. The initiative, led by national transport provider Mowasalat (Karwa), recently held a successful public trial at the Old Doha Port, signaling a new era of smart transportation for residents and visitors in the capital.

The service integrates seamlessly into the existing Karwa application, offering a user-friendly digital experience for hailing a driverless vehicle. As public interest grows, the service is now operational in key areas of Doha, demonstrating Qatar’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology in its public transport network.

Booking the Autonomous Ride

Accessing a Robotaxi is designed to be straightforward through the Karwa app. Users select the standard ‘Taxi’ category and must have a card or digital wallet as their payment method. If an autonomous vehicle is available within a 3km radius of the user’s location, the app will prompt them with an option to book the Robotaxi.

Upon the vehicle’s arrival, passengers unlock the doors via the app. Once inside, they are guided by a tablet to review safety instructions, fasten their seatbelts, and enter a one-time password (OTP) to begin their journey. The entire process is designed to be touchless and efficient, with the ride starting automatically after the user taps ‘Start Ride’ on the in-cabin tablet.

Safety and Onboard Experience

Passenger safety is a core component of the Robotaxi service. While the vehicles are driverless, a remote operations team monitors them continuously. Each Robotaxi is equipped with an in-cabin camera and a remote assistance call button on the tablet, allowing passengers to instantly connect with an operator who is aware of the vehicle’s status and surroundings.

For rider comfort and safety, passengers are not permitted in the front seat, limiting each ride to a maximum of two people. In the event a passenger needs to end the trip early, a ‘Pull Over’ option on the tablet will direct the vehicle to the nearest safe stopping point. In case of an accident, the remote operator immediately checks on the passenger, alerts emergency services, and can dispatch a support vehicle.

Operational Details and Limitations

The Robotaxi service is currently operating from 6 am to 4 am daily across West Bay, Central Doha, and the Hamad International Airport (HIA) area. Mowasalat plans to expand the supported zones and points of interest over time.

The service is priced identically to a regular taxi fare. The vehicles adhere strictly to traffic regulations and operate at a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour. To ensure a smooth autonomous journey, passengers cannot modify their drop-off location after booking, and the vehicle’s trunk is not available for use.
