Algeria Fuels AgriTech Growth With New Incubation And Acceleration Program

3 Min Read

The European Union Delegation in Algeria has announced the launch of a new incubation and acceleration program dedicated to startups and innovative projects in the agricultural technology (AgriTech) sector. The initiative is overseen by Algeria’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises and aims to modernize the nation’s agricultural landscape.

Cultivating Innovation Through Strategic Partnerships

This program is a key component of the “InnovAgro” initiative, which falls under the broader “Development of Digital and Green Entrepreneurship (DGA)” project. The DGA is a collaborative effort, co-funded by Germany and the European Union, and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The partnership leverages Germany’s global leadership in agricultural exports and its robust ecosystem of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This provides a valuable framework for Algeria, where agricultural practices are still largely traditional.

Empowering Algeria’s Agripreneurs

The startups selected for the program were chosen through the “Agripreneurs Challenge,” designed to support entrepreneurs and innovators working at the intersection of agriculture and technology in Algeria.

The program provides participants with a structured regulatory framework and strategic guidance to help them scale their solutions effectively. It serves as a catalyst for the Algerian innovation ecosystem, granting startups access to both national and international markets while amplifying the impact of technology on the agricultural sector.

Modernizing A Traditional Sector

Ammar Foufou, Head of University Research Projects (PRFU) at the University of August 20, 1955 in Skikda, highlighted the program’s role in stimulating innovation. He noted that it helps entrepreneurs transform their ideas into practical solutions, particularly in high-impact areas like the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and drone technology.

Foufou stressed the urgent need to modernize land management, water resource utilization, and farming methods through advanced technologies such as drones, AI-driven data analysis, hydroponics, and agricultural robotics. He added that the digital transformation led by startups is already beginning to reshape Algerian agriculture, moving it toward a smarter, more sustainable, and efficient model aimed at enhancing food security and boosting export capacity.
