Saudi Agritech Arable Secures Investment From Plug And Play Middle East To Scale Hydroponic Food Production

3 Min Read

The Riyadh-based agritech startup Arable has secured a fresh investment from Plug and Play Middle East to accelerate its mission of transforming food security within the Kingdom. This strategic backing follows Arable’s successful participation in The Misk Accelerator program, where the founders worked closely with regional experts to refine their desert-optimized farming solutions. As Saudi Arabia intensifies its focus on sustainable agriculture under Vision 2030, Arable is positioning itself as a critical player in reducing the nation’s reliance on imported fresh produce.

Revolutionizing Desert Agriculture

Founded in 2024 by Lawrence Ong and Christina Khalife, Arable specializes in developing, manufacturing, and operating advanced hydroponic systems specifically designed for the harsh Saudi climate. By creating highly controlled environments, the startup is able to produce premium leafy greens and herbs that are often difficult to cultivate locally using traditional methods. Their technology-driven approach allows for consistent, 365-day production cycles, ensuring that the volatility of the desert environment does not disrupt the supply chain.

Enhancing the Regional Food Supply Chain

Arable has already begun commercial operations, supplying a variety of vegetables to Riyadh’s premier kitchens and the wider HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, and Cafe) sector. The company’s logistics model is built on extreme efficiency, moving produce from harvest to delivery in as little as two to eight hours. This localized speed results in a shelf life that is 50% longer than imported alternatives, significantly reducing food waste for commercial partners while delivering superior flavor and nutritional value.

Sustainability at the Core of Expansion

A primary driver for the investment is Arable’s commitment to resource conservation. The company’s hydroponic systems utilize 90% less water than conventional farming, a vital metric for the water-scarce Gulf region. Furthermore, by eliminating the need for harmful pesticides and focusing on urban-proximate farming, Arable reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance food transport. While the current focus remains on scaling operations within Riyadh, the company has expressed clear intentions to expand its sustainable farming infrastructure across the GCC.
