The UAE has announced the launch of the 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory, a major humanitarian project aimed at producing 150 million date-based food units annually for underprivileged communities worldwide. The initiative was unveiled by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI).

Quick Facts

  • Project: 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory
  • Funding: $54.5 million private donation
  • Output: 150 million fortified meals annually
  • Completion: Scheduled for the end of 2027

A New Model for Sustainable Aid

The project moves away from traditional aid models, establishing what Sheikh Mohammed described as a large-scale, endowment-based system for sustainable food assistance. This approach is designed to provide long-term support and uphold human dignity, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to combat global hunger.

According to Mohammad Al Gergawi, Secretary General of MBRGI, the factory represents a strategic shift toward institutionalized humanitarian action. It combines large-scale food production with direct aid delivery to populations affected by economic and humanitarian crises.

Strategic Partnership and Operations

The factory’s development is funded entirely by a $54.5 million donation from businessman Mirwais Azizi. Operations will be managed by Al Barakah Dates in a partnership with MBRGI.

Currently under construction in Margham, the facility will process locally sourced dates into fortified food products enriched with essential vitamins and minerals. This model integrates food production with humanitarian distribution, creating a direct line from local farms to global aid recipients.

Boosting the Local Economy

Beyond its primary humanitarian mission, the 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory is set to have a significant impact on the UAE’s domestic economy. The initiative is expected to create new jobs, strengthen local agricultural supply chains by sourcing dates domestically, and enhance logistics networks for food distribution. It will also support the global reach of UAE-made food exports.
