The Moroccan city of Tata recently hosted a digital innovation hackathon, organized by the National Agency for the Development of Oasis and Argan Tree Zones (ANDZOA), bringing together 30 young participants from the Souss-Massa region. The event was designed to generate digital solutions for the unique economic, social, and environmental hurdles faced by the country’s vital oasis regions.

From Idea to Prototype
Held under the banner of “Digital innovation for sustainable and integrated development in oasis areas,” the hackathon aimed to guide participants from initial concept to a working prototype. The initiative, funded in partnership with the World Bank’s PROGREEN trust fund, is part of the broader Sustainable Management of Oasis Ecosystems in Morocco project.
Over four days, participants attended specialized workshops covering digitization, innovation, and artificial intelligence. Guided by experts in entrepreneurship and digital transformation, they worked in teams to develop actionable projects aimed at fostering sustainable development in oasis communities. The goal was to produce practical solutions that address specific local needs, from enhancing economic potential to preserving the environment and boosting social inclusion.
Building a Local Innovation Culture
Mohammed Ben Taleb, director of ANDZOA’s representation in Tata, emphasized that the initiative’s scope extends beyond a simple technical competition. He stated that the hackathon aims to encourage young people to leverage digital tools and AI to solve real-world problems facing their communities.
“This dynamic contributes to enhancing the attractiveness of oasis areas and supporting their path to sustainable and integrated development,” explained Ben Taleb. He added that the event served as a platform to embed a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among Tata’s youth, motivating them to turn ideas into tangible projects that can create jobs and stimulate the local economy.
