The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private-sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, is considering a $15 million investment into IMG Fund I, a new private equity fund managed by Morocco-based IMG Capital. The fund is set to back the growth of medium-sized Moroccan companies across several key economic sectors.
Quick Facts
- Proposed IFC Investment: Up to $15 million
- Fund Target Size: MAD 1.5 billion (~$165 million)
- Geographic Focus: Primarily Morocco
- Investment Stage: Growth Equity
Fueling Growth Across Morocco’s Key Sectors
Managed by IMG Capital, the new fund is targeting a final size of MAD 1.5 billion. It plans to make between seven and ten investments in Moroccan companies demonstrating strong growth potential.
According to the IFC, individual investments are expected to range from MAD 60 million to MAD 200 million ($6 million to $20 million). This capital injection will help portfolio companies finance their expansion plans, enhance competitiveness, and drive job creation. The fund’s strategy is centered on industries identified as critical drivers for Morocco’s economic development, including healthcare, financial services, digital infrastructure, education, and consumer goods.
A Focus on Institutionalizing Family-Owned Businesses
The fund has a specific mandate to support a unique segment of the Moroccan market. It aims to provide capital and strategic guidance to companies at a critical transition point, helping them scale and professionalize their operations.
“The Fund will mainly target family-owned businesses looking to institutionalize before or after a succession and opportunistically buy & build,” the IFC stated in its project disclosure.
IFC Backing Signals Confidence in Morocco’s PE Market
If approved, the IFC’s commitment would provide IMG Fund I with significant international validation from a leading development finance institution. This backing is expected to act as a catalyst, attracting additional institutional investors and strengthening confidence in Morocco’s broader private equity ecosystem.
By channeling capital into growing local businesses, the fund aims to bolster entrepreneurship and contribute to the diversification of the national economy, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a key destination for private equity investment in Africa.
