How an Egyptian Founder is Reviving Ancient Pharaoh-Era Recipes for Her Natural Skincare Startup

4 Min Read

For 28-year-old Egyptian founder Mariam, a history degree wasn’t just an academic pursuit—it was the blueprint for her business. While studying at the Faculty of Arts, she discovered that ancient Egyptians were pioneers in using natural soaps for skincare. This historical insight sparked an idea to launch a modern venture built on ancient traditions.

Quick Facts

  • Founder: Mariam, 28-year-old Egyptian history graduate.
  • Concept: Skincare inspired by ancient Egyptian recipes.
  • Product: Over 30 types of handmade, all-natural soaps.

From Ancient Texts to Modern Formulations

Mariam’s journey from historian to entrepreneur began during her university studies. She explains that after reading about ancient Egyptian soap-making methods, she decided to revive the concept with a contemporary twist, focusing exclusively on natural ingredients.

The project started small, with Mariam creating batches for friends struggling with skin issues. After positive feedback and growing demand from her inner circle, friends encouraged her to transform her passion into a formal business to serve a wider audience.

A Product Line Rooted in Nature

At the core of Mariam’s product line is a natural glycerin base, entirely free of harsh chemicals, making it suitable for all skin types. She emphasizes her commitment to using only natural ingredients, such as fresh watermelon juice, rose water, rice water, lavender, turmeric, frankincense, honey, and various berries. She also uses natural oils and herbs, which she dries or distills herself.

The brand offers a diverse range of over 30 specialized soaps tailored to specific needs. Products include green tea or charcoal soap for acne-prone skin, turmeric or orange soap for evening out skin tone, and unique formulations for dry, sensitive, and combination skin.

The venture has expanded beyond facial skincare to include a natural rosemary and olive oil-based hair soap designed as a shampoo alternative to treat scalp issues, hair loss, and dandruff. The product line also features specially formulated soaps for children, sensitive areas, and even pets. A gentle glycerin and olive oil soap is also available for use after swimming.

Bootstrapping a Brand, One Bar at a Time

Launched just one year ago, Mariam’s venture has already seen strong sales and market validation. Her participation in the “Diyarna” exhibition provided a significant opportunity to connect with a larger customer base after her application was accepted.

Mariam acknowledges that some of her product prices might seem high but attributes this to the cost of high-quality natural raw materials and the intensive, manual labor involved in every stage—from preparing ingredients to the final packaging.

Her husband has been her primary supporter, assisting with the increasing production demands while she continues to personally manage every aspect of the creative process, from recipe development to shaping and wrapping each bar of soap. For Mariam, the ultimate goal isn’t just to sell soap but to foster a culture of safe, nature-inspired skincare that honors Egyptian heritage while meeting modern needs.
