A new innovation center named Tech Town has officially opened in the Kafr Sousa district of Damascus, aiming to support startups and accelerate the growth of Syria’s digital economy. The launch was attended by key officials, including the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abd al-Salam Haikal, and the Director of the Syrian Investment Authority, Talal Al-Hilali, signaling strong government interest in the initiative.

An Integrated Ecosystem for Ideas and Companies
Tech Town is designed to provide a comprehensive environment for early-stage companies and entrepreneurs. The facility includes co-working spaces, private offices, event halls, and specialized laboratories focused on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), and virtual reality.
According to CEO Sanan Hatahet, the project is an “integrated system that brings together people, ideas, and companies in one environment.” He explained that the center’s core pillars include incubating startups from their initial stages, helping them develop prototypes, and connecting them with partners and investors. The hub aims to be a central point for turning innovative concepts into viable projects.
Government Backs Public-Private Partnership
During the opening, Minister Haikal described the center as a project that “embodies the confidence of Syrians in their capabilities and their faith in the future.” He emphasized that Tech Town represents a complementary effort to the government’s work and highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in building the digital economy.
Haikal stated that the ministry will actively collaborate with the hub to support entrepreneurial initiatives. He also noted that the government is focused on removing obstacles hindering the growth of the communications and technology sector to help reintegrate Syria into the global tech landscape and expand digital service availability.
Upskilling Talent for a Knowledge-Based Economy
Beyond physical infrastructure, Tech Town will focus on developing local talent. CEO Sanan Hatahet highlighted that the center will offer specialized training programs designed to meet current market needs and prepare a new generation of engineers, developers, and entrepreneurs.
These upskilling efforts, combined with the R&D capabilities of the specialized labs, are part of a broader strategy to build a knowledge-based economy in Syria, leveraging local talent to create new technologies and products.
