Google’s Gemini AI assistant has surpassed 950 million monthly users, putting it close to joining the company’s group of products with more than 1 billion users.
Alphabet shared the figure during its Q2 2026 earnings call, saying Gemini’s user base has tripled from last year. The company reported 750 million monthly active users in February.
Gemini’s growth brings it closer to competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai pointed to newer agentic features, including Daily Brief and the personalized Gemini Spark agent, as drivers of engagement.
The assistant is gaining traction beyond Android. App analytics firm Appfigures estimates that Gemini was downloaded more than 137 million times on iOS over the past 12 months, helped by launches such as the Nano Banana image generation model.
Sensor Tower’s latest State of AI report said Gemini held 27.7% of the AI assistant market in the first half of 2026, while ChatGPT’s share fell below 50%.
Google also said its Q&A-style AI search mode surpassed 1 billion users during the quarter and contributed to an incremental increase in search queries.
