Huawei has submitted a proposal to supply Egypt with 2,008 AI chips and build the supporting data center infrastructure, according to Bloomberg. The bid responds to an Egyptian government tender, but authorities have not confirmed whether it has been accepted.
The proposal includes 1,408 Ascend 950-series processors for a cloud platform focused on AI model training. Huawei has also offered 600 additional chips, either Ascend 950 or Ascend 910B processors, for two inference clusters that would run trained models.
According to documents reviewed by Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter, Huawei proposed completing the infrastructure within 12 months. The plan also includes a partnership with Chinese AI company iFlytek. Both companies have been on the US Commerce Department’s Entity List since 2019.
The US is considering a competing proposal, Bloomberg reported. The State Department has approached Nvidia, AMD and Microsoft about potentially forming a consortium to challenge Huawei’s bid. No US proposal has been confirmed.
A successful Huawei bid would expand Egypt’s AI computing capacity and give the company an early international showcase for its Ascend processors. For Egypt, the tender could help build the infrastructure needed to support its AI ambitions. Neither Huawei nor Egyptian authorities has publicly commented on the proposal.
