Egypt’s National Research Centre plans to expand the creation of startups based on its research and accelerate the commercialization of innovations, according to its president, Mamdouh Moawad.
In an interview with Al Shorouk, Moawad said the centre is building an integrated system led by its Technology and Information Transfer Office (TICO), alongside the National Research Centre’s innovation products company and the Egypt Research Platform. The system will incubate innovators, support startups and provide technical and financial advice to help turn research ideas into market-ready companies.
The centre is also working on national projects in renewable energy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, sustainable agriculture and technology localization. Its research includes solar cells, energy storage, locally produced medical supplies, water-efficient crops and climate-resilient farming methods.
Moawad highlighted the creation of an artificial intelligence centre focused on medicine, as well as the use of algorithms in nanotechnology and molecular modelling to shorten laboratory testing times. The centre also supports local manufacturing through initiatives aimed at replacing imported production inputs.
He said the centre’s main challenges are limited funding and weak links between research and industry. Over the next five years, it aims to expand startup creation, strengthen self-financing through partnerships and become a key contributor to Egyptian industry. The centre has ranked first among research institutions in Egypt and the region in the Scimago classification for four consecutive years.
