Egypt’s 131 universities and 182 higher education institutes are preparing to welcome around 4 million students for the 2026/27 academic year, which begins on September 19, according to the Ministry of Higher Education.
The ministry said universities have reviewed classrooms, laboratories, facilities and safety systems ahead of the new term. The first semester will run for 15 weeks and end on December 31, with final exams scheduled from January 2 to January 21, 2027. The second semester begins on February 6.
Alongside academic programmes, universities are placing greater emphasis on digital skills, foreign languages, career development and entrepreneurship. Ministry spokesperson Adel Abdel Ghaffar said institutions will organise innovation and startup-related competitions, while career development centres will support students in preparing for the labour market.
The Supreme Council of Universities has also launched a central platform for student activities, allowing students to participate in activities across universities. Council secretary Mostafa Refaat encouraged students to use the platform and read the “Who Am I” booklet, which aims to strengthen their understanding of Egypt’s history and national identity.
Cairo University said it has completed preparations for more than 260,000 students, including upgrades to infrastructure, student services and accommodation for around 14,000 students. Capital University also highlighted digital services, online learning tools and entrepreneurship-related student activities as part of its preparations.
