EBRD Approves Up to $32.1M Equity Investment in Hassan Allam Utilities’ RWD

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved an equity investment of up to $32.1 million in RWD Investments BV, a water infrastructure platform wholly owned by Egypt-based Hassan Allam Utilities.

The investment is part of a $92.9 million project to expand RWD’s water infrastructure activities in Egypt, with a focus on desalination and future projects developed through public-private partnerships (PPPs), according to the announcement.

Established in 2019, the Netherlands-based RWD plans to use the investment to support its medium-term expansion pipeline, cover development costs for large-scale water projects and increase desalinated water capacity. It will also support efforts to improve the operating efficiency of existing plants.

The PPP component is intended to create a framework for private-sector participation in additional water infrastructure projects. The initiative could also help expand alternative water sources for businesses, including those in areas not connected to the municipal network.

RWD’s next phase will focus on executing its expansion plans in Egypt while developing future desalination and other large-scale water projects.
