Banque Misr has invested in more than 13 startups and is using multiple channels to support Egypt’s entrepreneurship and fintech ecosystem, according to Mohamed El-Sabban, the bank’s head of innovation and strategic projects.

Speaking at the Techne Alexandria 2026 summit, El-Sabban said the bank’s approach combines venture capital, direct startup investments and accelerator programmes rather than relying on a single support model.

The bank is also seeking to attract foreign investment into Egypt and bring international startups into the local market, where it can invest in their growth, he said.

El-Sabban highlighted MoneyFellows as an example of an innovative savings product based on the traditional association model. He said Egypt needs more products of this kind, including solutions aimed at businesses as well as individuals.

He also pointed to infrastructure such as InstaPay, iScore and Haweya as helping fintech companies develop new products. The next priority, he said, should be moving from faster payments to faster credit through infrastructure that can improve the flow of financing across the market.

El-Sabban added that fintech startups should address governance and banking requirements early, rather than waiting until later growth stages. Sustainable operating models, clear rules and strong governance can help them work with a wider range of investors and larger companies.
