Saudi Arabia is expanding its use of artificial intelligence beyond digital services, with a focus on advanced manufacturing, materials science, drug development and semiconductor technologies.
One example is a partnership between Aramco and US-based SandboxAQ. The companies are using specialised AI models to analyse data on more than 1 million catalysts and identify the most promising materials for laboratory testing.
The approach could reduce the number of physical experiments needed in industrial research by narrowing large datasets to the strongest candidates. It also highlights how AI can support research and development, rather than being limited to office automation or content generation.
SandboxAQ CEO Jack Hidary said Saudi Arabia has an opportunity to develop technologies owned by local institutions, including advanced materials, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor-related applications, according to a report cited by Jawlah.
Potential applications include battery materials, minerals, environmentally friendly alternatives to some chemicals, drug design and diagnostic tools. The company also pointed to semiconductor materials as a possible entry point for Saudi Arabia, building on its chemical and industrial capabilities.
The broader objective is to move from adopting ready-made foreign solutions to developing local expertise, patents and exportable technologies. The article also highlights future challenges in data security, navigation, quantum computing and cybersecurity, reinforcing the need for locally developed technical capabilities.
