World, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is expanding its identity verification technology to banks and financial institutions as AI agents take on more tasks involving money and sensitive data.
The company said its World ID for Agents service allows users to give an AI agent a verification proof linked to their identity. Financial institutions can then distinguish between agents acting with authorization from verified users and anonymous automated systems.
The system uses cryptographic proofs to confirm an agent’s connection to an authenticated person without requiring personal data to be disclosed in every transaction. World’s broader World ID system includes several verification methods, including government documents and selfies. Its Orb device uses iris scanning for a more advanced verification tier focused on proving a person’s uniqueness.
World is working with Bain Capital, Pantera Capital, VanEck Funds, OpenExchange and Outtake to explore applications in financial operations and sensitive communications. No bank has yet been announced as a commercial user, according to the announcement.
The company is also extending World ID to Zoom, where verified participants can display a blue badge to help reduce impersonation and deepfake risks in sensitive meetings.
World noted that verifying an agent’s connection to a user does not by itself confirm that every action is authorized. Setting permissions and monitoring transactions remain important parts of the security process.
