etisalat UAE Becomes First MENA Telecom Operator to Receive ISO AI Governance Certification

1 Min Read

etisalat UAE has become the first telecommunications operator in the Middle East and North Africa to receive accredited ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification for its Artificial Intelligence Management System, according to the company.

The certification followed an independent assessment by LRQA, a global assurance and certification provider accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard focused on AI management systems, covering areas including risk assessment, transparency, accountability, human oversight and continuous evaluation.

The process involved teams from Technology & Information, AI Engineering & Factory, Business Excellence and business units responsible for AI applications.

Marwan Bin Shakar, chief technology officer at etisalat UAE, said the framework would help the company manage AI risks and maintain human oversight as it expands the technology across its services and operations.

The certification comes as etisalat UAE develops initiatives including agentic AI integrations, the University of Sharjah AI Innovation Lab and NetSecure360, an AI-powered cybersecurity solution. The company said the system will support its broader Responsible AI Framework and provide customers and partners with greater clarity on how its AI-enabled services are developed and managed.
