Moroccan think tank IMAL Initiative for Climate and Development has been selected as one of five global winners of the Global Capacity Building Coalition (GCBC) Accelerator, a program focused on helping developing economies strengthen climate finance systems.
The Rabat-based organization was chosen from 65 applicants, including think tanks, public institutions, private companies and academic organizations. It will receive more than 12 months of support to help develop national platforms that can channel investment toward climate and development priorities.
The announcement was made on October 14 on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok. Founded in 2022, IMAL describes itself as North Africa’s first independent, nonprofit think tank focused on climate issues. It works on research, policy dialogue and climate action across Morocco, Africa and Arab countries.
The award comes as Morocco seeks to finance ambitious climate targets. Its updated Nationally Determined Contribution aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 53% by 2035, requiring an estimated $60 billion, while adaptation efforts are expected to need another $36.1 billion.
IMAL has contributed to discussions around a national climate finance platform and aims to use the accelerator to support its development and attract investment for climate-related projects, according to the announcement.
