Oman-Founded 44.01 Secures $11.7m Carbon Removal Deal From Frontier

Oman-founded carbon removal company 44.01 has secured $11.7M in offtake agreements from US-based Frontier to remove and permanently store 20,932 tons of carbon dioxide between 2028 and 2031.

The deal is Frontier’s first purchase based on in-situ mineralization, a process that converts captured carbon dioxide into solid minerals underground. Frontier makes carbon removal purchases on behalf of companies including Stripe, Google, Shopify, Autodesk, H&M Group and Workday.

According to 44.01, the project will move its technology beyond short-term pilot injections and demonstrate continuous operations over several years. It will also generate data on injection rates, water requirements and operating costs to assess whether the process can scale economically.

The technology dissolves captured carbon dioxide in water and injects it into peridotite, a naturally occurring magnesium-rich rock. The carbon reacts with the rock to form stable solid carbonates, with mineralization potentially taking place within one to three years.

44.01 said it has demonstrated the process in Oman and the UAE. Oman’s extensive exposed peridotite formations provide suitable geological conditions and could offer additional carbon storage capacity.

The findings may help determine whether in-situ mineralization can support permanent carbon removal for hard-to-abate industries such as cement and steel.
