After a Record $133M Round, Saudi Grocery App Nana Enters Financial Reorganization

2 Min Read

One of Saudi Arabia’s most heavily-funded startups, Nana, is entering financial reorganization proceedings before the Commercial Court in Riyadh. The move comes after the grocery delivery platform struggled to manage high operational costs amid intense market competition.

Quick Facts

  • Filing for financial reorganization in Riyadh court.
  • Previously raised over $200 million in total funding.
  • Creditors have 90 days to submit claims.

A Trail of Blockbuster Funding

Founded in 2016, Nana quickly became a high-profile player in the Kingdom’s tech scene, raising over $200 million across five funding rounds. Its most significant capital injection was a $133 million Series C round, one of the largest ever for a Saudi startup.

The round was led by Kingdom Holding, the investment firm of Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, and Uni-Ventures, signaling strong investor confidence in the company’s growth model.

The Cost of a Brutal Price War

Despite its substantial war chest, the capital proved insufficient to protect Nana from the market’s harsh realities. The company faced escalating operational costs and what sources describe as a “brutal price war” in the on-demand delivery sector.

This intense competition has squeezed margins and made profitability a significant challenge for even the most well-funded players in the space.

Reorganization, Not Liquidation

Majed bin Munir Al-Nimr, the appointed bankruptcy trustee, announced the proceedings for Central Markets Company, Nana’s parent company. It is critical to note that this is a financial reorganization, a legal process designed to allow the company to restructure its debts while continuing to operate.

This strategic move provides Nana with an opportunity for a fresh start, differentiating its path from competitors like Shgardi, which ceased operations entirely after citing similar pressures from fierce competition and predatory pricing.
