UAE telecom operator du has partnered with Ericsson to successfully test a new 5G technology aimed at significantly improving Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for residential customers. The proof of concept deployed 5G Standalone (SA) using millimeter wave (mmWave) extended range technology, demonstrating the potential to deliver gigabit-speed internet to more homes across the country.
Quick Facts
- Successful 5G mmWave trial for home internet.
- Aimed to deliver gigabit speeds and wider coverage.
- First implementation of this specific technology in the UAE.
Pushing 5G to the Home
The trial marks the first time mmWave extended range technology has been implemented in the UAE. By leveraging Ericsson’s latest mmWave radio solution, AIR 5343, and advanced software, the test achieved gigabit speeds across wider coverage areas. This technical milestone is expected to boost capacity for high-demand applications and allow for a faster rollout of high-performance FWA services, providing a powerful alternative to traditional fiber broadband in residential neighborhoods.
Fahad Al Hassawi, Chief Executive Officer at du, commented on the trial’s success. “Leveraging mmWave extended range with Ericsson, we are enhancing our Fixed Wireless Access services and reinforcing the UAE’s position as a 5G leader. This proof of concept helps us explore how advanced 5G technologies can improve service delivery, create new customer offerings, and strengthen our role in shaping the UAE’s digital infrastructure.”
A Milestone for UAE’s Digital Infrastructure
The collaboration between the two companies highlights the viability of using a macro deployment architecture to deliver high-capacity FWA services. This approach validates the use of mmWave technology for broad residential broadband applications within the UAE market.
“This PoC with du represents a significant advancement for 5G Standalone deployment in the UAE,” said Petra Schirren, President of Ericsson Gulf. “Together, we are demonstrating how mmWave extended range technology can transform Fixed Wireless Access while showcasing the benefits of enhanced spectrum utilization for both operators and end users.”
The project supports the UAE’s Vision 2031 by accelerating digital transformation and laying the groundwork for next-generation connectivity services across the nation.
