Egypt’s AIS Inks Deal With Huawei to Localize Advanced Battery Storage Manufacturing

3 Min Read

Egyptian industrial firm AIS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with global tech giant Huawei to establish local manufacturing for Grid-Forming Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Egypt. The alliance is a strategic move to support Egypt’s renewable energy infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of advanced energy storage technologies.

Quick Facts

  • The Deal: MOU between Egypt’s AIS and Huawei.
  • The Goal: Localize manufacturing of battery energy storage systems.
  • The Impact: Enhance Egypt’s clean energy supply chain and grid stability.

Bolstering Egypt’s Clean Energy Ambitions

As Egypt continues to scale its renewable energy projects, the need for dependable grid-scale storage solutions has become critical. Battery Energy Storage Systems are essential for integrating intermittent energy sources like solar and wind, ensuring grid stability, and improving overall system efficiency. This partnership directly addresses that demand by aiming to produce locally manufactured, grid-connected storage systems tailored to the country’s growing energy requirements.

The initiative is designed to strengthen supply chain resilience, create skilled jobs, and facilitate technology transfer, positioning Egypt as a regional center for clean energy innovation.

Combining Local Expertise with Global Tech

The collaboration leverages AIS’s industrial capabilities with Huawei’s extensive experience in digital power and energy storage technology.

Karim Arafa, CEO of AIS, commented on the agreement, stating, “Our collaboration with Huawei marks a milestone for AIS as we move beyond traditional boundaries to localize advanced energy technologies in Egypt. By combining our industrial expertise with Huawei’s global innovation, we are building a sustainable ecosystem of resilient, homegrown BESS solutions.” He added that the initiative reflects a commitment to “positioning Egypt as a competitive hub for renewable energy manufacturing, powered by local talent and advanced infrastructure.”

Tony Bu, CEO of Huawei Egypt Digital Power, added, “This partnership with AIS is a critical step in Huawei’s commitment to driving energy transformation in Egypt. Together, we will deliver cutting-edge grid-forming energy storage technologies that strengthen energy security, create local jobs, and foster technology transfer. We are proud to support Egypt’s leadership in the clean energy transition.”

Building a Homegrown Energy Tech Ecosystem

The partnership will explore establishing local manufacturing facilities, localizing key components, and developing a skilled workforce specialized in the energy storage sector. Both companies plan to work with stakeholders across the country to speed up the deployment of BESS technologies throughout Egypt’s power grid, signaling a significant step toward energy independence and sustainability.
