Egypt’s ITIDA and Plug and Play Conclude Aswan Bootcamp as Startups Raise $3.7M

4 Min Read

The Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and Plug and Play Tech Center have officially wrapped up the Aswan Bootcamp Series, bringing crucial startup support to Egypt’s southern governorates. The initiative graduated 61 tech startups from Upper Egypt, with several participating ventures collectively securing an estimated $3.7 million (EGP 200 million) in new investments.

Quick Facts

  • 61 Upper Egypt tech startups completed the program.

  • Participating ventures collectively secured $3.7 million in investment.

  • ITIDA assumed full funding responsibility to ensure completion.

Overcoming Structural Hurdles to Empower Egyptian Founders

Launched in November 2024, the Aswan Bootcamp Series originally operated through a collaborative model involving the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). When shifts in international development cooperation temporarily halted external financing, the program faced a critical juncture.

Rather than suspending the initiative, ITIDA recognized the overwhelming demand from local founders. With over 150 applications flowing in from across Upper Egypt, the agency stepped in to assume full financial responsibility. This rapid intervention allowed the program to successfully complete all three of its planned phases.

Accelerating Tech Innovation Outside Cairo

Delivered through an intensive curriculum, the bootcamp combined technical training with strategic mentorship from global industry experts. The program focused on equipping startups from Aswan and neighboring governorates with the operational frameworks required to scale their business models and attract institutional capital.

The strategy yielded tangible results, evidenced by the $3.7 million injected into several participating startups by regional investors. This influx of capital highlights a growing appetite for ventures operating outside Egypt’s traditional urban centers.

“It is a demonstration of a broader national direction—one that places startup growth and entrepreneurial empowerment at the center of economic development, particularly in Upper Egypt, where the potential to build globally competitive companies is significant,” said Eng. Ahmed El-Zaher, CEO of ITIDA.

Closing Event Insights and Nile Delta Expansion

The culmination of the bootcamp took place at the Digital Egypt Innovation Hub (Creativa) in Aswan. The closing event gathered key stakeholders across the ecosystem, including Aswan Governor Amr Lashin, Acting President of Aswan University Loay Saad El-Din Nasrat, and Karima El Hakim, Partner Africa at Plug and Play Tech Center.

Throughout the event, panel discussions focused on scaling strategies, regulatory frameworks, and market entry. A dedicated session explored how digital tools can drive financial inclusion, while participating founders shared raw insights on the distinct challenges of building robust tech startups far from the capital.

Following the success in Upper Egypt, ITIDA plans to replicate the bootcamp model in the Nile Delta. This geographic expansion supports the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s ongoing strategy to decentralize the innovation economy and distribute venture opportunities more evenly across the country.
