L’Oréal Groupe in Egypt has released a comprehensive socio-economic impact study, detailing its contributions to the national economy and local communities. The report, conducted by French economic research firm Astères using OECD-based modeling, outlines how the beauty giant’s operations have become a significant driver of industrial growth, job creation, and social empowerment in the country.
Quick Facts
- One direct L’Oréal job generates 43 indirect roles.
- Supports over 22,000 jobs across the Egyptian economy.
- Social programs have positively impacted 117,000 Egyptian lives.
A Macroeconomic Multiplier for Egypt’s Economy
The study reveals that L’Oréal Egypt and its ecosystem are vital drivers of the country’s industrial growth. Through its localized value chain, the company supports more than 22,000 jobs spanning packaging, logistics, distribution, raw materials, and retail. The report highlights a powerful multiplier effect: every direct role at L’Oréal Egypt creates an additional 43 jobs across the local economy.
Central to this impact is L’Oréal’s Cairo manufacturing plant. Opened in 2013, the facility acts as a key production hub for the Middle East and North Africa, exporting 85% of its production to 20 countries.
“This report puts concrete, audited facts behind our corporate purpose and commitment to Egypt,” said Mohamed El Araby, Managing Director of L’Oréal Egypt. “We do not just operate in Egypt; we invest in its future and actively contribute to its advancement. Our journey is definitive proof that business performance and positive social impact go hand-in-hand.”
The findings were presented at an event attended by senior government officials, including H.E. Dr. Ahmed Rostom, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and H.E. Eng. Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry.
H.E. Dr. Ahmed Rostom stated that the report’s findings “demonstrate that investing in Egypt extends beyond economic returns, representing a sustainable partnership dedicated to empowering people and building the future.”
Empowering Communities and Enhancing Social Mobility
Aligned with the social pillars of Egypt Vision 2030, L’Oréal Egypt’s initiatives have directly affected over 117,000 individuals, with a strong focus on women’s entrepreneurship and scientific advancement.
Key programs include the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Egypt National Young Talents Programme, which has funded 24 Egyptian female scientists since 2018. Additionally, the ‘Beauty For a Better Life’ vocational training program has provided over 1,000 vulnerable women with professional hairdressing and beauty skills to help them establish micro-businesses. The ‘Tech Her Up’ digital accelerator has also trained 600 Egyptian women in advanced technology and digital skills.
Setting a Benchmark for Green Industrialization
Under its global ‘L’Oréal for the Future’ program, the company has worked to separate its industrial growth from its environmental footprint. The Cairo plant, which produced 442 million units in the last five years, now serves as a model for green industrialization in Egypt.
The factory is fully LEED certified for green building design. Since 2024, the plant has achieved 100% renewable energy use and operates a 100% industrial Waterloop system, recycling and reusing all industrial water in a closed loop. The facility also maintains a commitment to using 100% recycled PET in its local haircare product packaging.
