Meta has released Muse Glimmer, a smaller open-weight AI model designed for agentic tasks and capable of running on a Mac or PC with a single graphics card.
The launch reflects Meta’s push toward AI systems that operate directly on users’ devices. Open-weight models typically offer lower costs and allow developers to customize their core components, unlike closed models controlled fully by their creators.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also called for the US to reduce policy barriers affecting open-weight AI development. He said current restrictions on training data create additional friction for American companies competing with Chinese developers in the segment.
Zuckerberg argued that limiting access to foreign open-weight models would not be an effective response. He also backed model distillation, which uses a more powerful AI system to train a smaller one.
According to the announcement, Meta plans to release more open-weight models and create a governance structure that gives independent directors authority to approve safety criteria for model releases. The company is making the move as businesses look for more affordable AI systems and remain concerned about cybersecurity incidents involving major models.
