Morocco and Mistral Release Open-Source AI Tools For Darija

Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform (MTNRA) and French AI company Mistral have released the first two open-source tools developed under their partnership, focused on understanding Moroccan Darija.

The release includes a language identification classifier that distinguishes between Arabic dialects, as well as an automatic speech recognition model built on Mistral’s Voxtral technology. The model transcribes spoken Darija into text and can handle conversations that switch between Arabic, French and English.

By making the tools open source, the ministry said Moroccan developers, startups, researchers, businesses and government agencies can build applications for public services, education, media, customer support, document digitisation and multilingual data processing.

The release supports Morocco’s AI Made in Morocco roadmap and Maroc Digital 2030 strategy, which aim to develop AI tools suited to the country’s linguistic and cultural context. It also complements AI solutions the ministry is developing for its AI marketplace and public administrations.

The partnership follows a September 2025 memorandum of understanding between Morocco and Mistral covering education, applied research and AI knowledge sharing. The ministry said additional models and use cases are in development.
