OpenAI has introduced new capabilities for Codex, its software engineering agent, including reusable cloud development environments that developers can access from any device.
Announced at OpenAI’s DevDay, the update is designed to make Codex more useful beyond a developer’s laptop. Teams can use shared environments with approved settings and permissions, while persistent configurations should help tasks start faster, the company said.
OpenAI is also updating the Codex CLI with voice controls, a new /agents view for managing multiple tasks, improved session management and a redesigned terminal interface for longer coding sessions.
Codex will be available in a new code review experience inside the ChatGPT desktop app. Developers can use it to summarize changes, investigate potential issues and support reviews for GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. Automatic reviews can also run while users are away.
Another release, Codex Security Cloud, can scan GitHub repositories on demand, on a schedule or after new commits. It can investigate findings, remove duplicates and prepare fixes in the cloud, according to the announcement.
OpenAI also announced API updates, including a Decisions API for real-time decision-making and an updated Agents API with computer-use support and integration with Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents.
