Orange will invest €25 million to support digital transformation projects, startups and entrepreneurship in Egypt, according to comments by Dr Abdel Wahab Ghoneim, vice president of the Arab Digital Economy Union.

Speaking on the Egyptian radio programme Waraa al-Hadath, Ghoneim said a recent meeting between Egypt’s president and Orange Group’s chief executive focused on expanding the company’s investments in the country’s information and communications technology sector.

The discussions covered digital transformation, training Egyptian youth in emerging technologies, and expanding telecommunications services. Orange is also expected to invest in communications towers serving villages, new cities and coastal areas, while contributing to the rollout of 5G services, Ghoneim said.

He added that Orange operates large contact centres in Egypt serving European markets, including France. The company’s startup support is intended to help increase the number of technology companies and youth-led businesses in Egypt, while encouraging the development of new digital products and services.

Ghoneim said Egypt’s outsourcing, software, artificial intelligence and call-centre industries currently generate nearly $8 billion, with that figure expected to reach about $12 billion within two years.
