Lucid Group, the electric vehicle manufacturer heavily backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has outlined an aggressive product and financial roadmap designed to achieve profitability and positive free cash flow. During its recent investor day in New York, the automaker revealed technical details of its upcoming Midsize platform, announced new sub-$50,000 SUV models named Cosmos and Earth, and highlighted advanced discussions to deploy autonomous vehicles on the Uber network.
Quick Facts
- Midsize EVs Cosmos and Earth start under $50,000.
- Deepened Uber partnership targets large-scale autonomous vehicle deployment.
- New Atlas drive unit dramatically lowers vehicle manufacturing costs.
Engineering a Path to Profitability and Scale
Lucid is shifting its strategic focus heavily toward near-term execution and unit economics. The company plans to scale its upcoming Gravity SUV throughout 2026 while simultaneously rolling out aggressive material cost reductions and introducing new recurring revenue streams based on software, services, and platform licensing.
A core component of this strategy is the new Midsize platform, which significantly expands the automaker’s total addressable market. By prioritizing radical efficiency in engineering, the company aims to reduce the bill of materials across labor, capital intensity, and battery production.
“Today, we’re keeping the same Lucid product and technology DNA intact, while applying increased scale, capital efficiency, and cost discipline, and materially reduced costs, to enable a great business with a clear and credible path to profitability and free cash flow,” said Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid.
Enter Cosmos and Earth: The Sub-$50K Midsize Strategy
The newly introduced Midsize platform targets high-volume premium segments with a starting price below $50,000. Lucid confirmed the first two models on this architecture: the Cosmos, an SUV focused on space and performance, and the Earth, an SUV aimed at adventurous driving dynamics. A third, undisclosed model is also in development.
To achieve this lower price point without sacrificing range or performance, the engineering team developed Atlas, a next-generation electric drive unit. Featuring a smaller, lighter, and simpler design with identical front and rear housings, the Atlas unit drastically improves manufacturing efficiency.
Emad Dlala, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Software at Lucid, noted that battery packs typically represent 30 to 40 percent of an electric vehicle’s cost.
“Smaller batteries, fewer parts, and tighter integration mean lower cost, better performance, and a superior customer experience, all at the same time,” Dlala explained.
Autonomous Ambitions: The Uber Partnership and Lunar Robotaxi
Beyond consumer vehicles, Lucid is aggressively pursuing the commercial autonomy sector. The automaker is finalizing an agreement with Uber to deploy its Midsize platform vehicles for ride-hailing at a scale mirroring the existing Gravity robotaxi program, with intentions to expand over time.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the strategic alignment between the two companies.
“Lucid’s unmatched efficiency, autonomy-ready vehicle architectures, and customer-centric approach give us confidence in our ability to deliver autonomous mobility together at global scale,” Khosrowshahi stated.
To anchor this vision, Lucid unveiled Lunar, a purpose-built, two-seat robotaxi concept built on the Midsize platform. While still in the conceptual phase, Lunar is designed to maximize utilization and lifetime operating economics for commercial fleet operators.
Relevance to the MENA Tech and Mobility Ecosystem
While Lucid is headquartered in California, its deep financial and operational ties to Saudi Arabia make its structural evolution highly relevant to the MENA region. Majority-owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Lucid operates its AMP-2 manufacturing facility in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC).
The introduction of a more accessible, sub-$50,000 Midsize platform aligns directly with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals of fostering a localized, sustainable automotive manufacturing sector. Lower-priced models significantly increase the potential for mass EV adoption across the GCC, while the company’s push into autonomous ride-hailing and software licensing provides a blueprint for regional mobility startups looking to diversify their own revenue streams.
