Rolls-Royce and Makeen Sign First Saudi Licence for High-Speed Engine Manufacturing

Saudi Engines Manufacturing Company (Makeen) will partner with the UK’s Rolls-Royce to manufacture high-speed engines in Saudi Arabia under the kingdom’s first individual licence agreement of its kind.

The companies will target marine and naval applications, including high-speed ferries, coast guard vessels and patrol boats, according to Rolls-Royce.

The agreement will combine Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ mtu technology, which is used for high-speed engines and advanced propulsion, with Makeen’s local manufacturing capabilities. Andreas Görtz, president of the mobile and sustainable business unit at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said the partnership would support the development of a domestic industrial base using advanced technology.

Makeen was established in 2021 as a joint venture between Saudi Aramco, South Korea’s Hyundai and Riyadh-based Dussur. The company manufactures, builds, sells and services marine and land-based engines, including high-speed engines.

The deal comes as Saudi Arabia pushes industrial localisation through its National Industrial Development and Logistics Programme and the Made in Saudi initiative, which focus on sectors including energy, mining, logistics and manufacturing.
