Samsung Pay is now available in Morocco, giving eligible Mastercard cardholders at participating banks the option to make payments through compatible Samsung devices without using a physical card.
The service uses Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES), which replaces sensitive card details with unique digital tokens during transactions. Mastercard said authentication and risk-based safeguards add further protection for payment credentials.
The launch builds on Mastercard’s existing tokenisation work in Morocco and expands its collaboration with local financial institutions and technology partners, according to the company. Merchants that accept supported contactless payments can offer Samsung Pay as an additional payment method.
Mastercard and Samsung will also run a joint campaign combining promotional activity with consumer education to encourage everyday use of the service.
Mastercard said the launch supports its broader goal of tokenising all online transactions by 2030. Mohamed Benomar, Mastercard’s country manager for North West Africa, said the companies aim to make digital payments faster, simpler and more secure. Hongseok Lee, president at Samsung Electronics Maghreb Arab, said the service is intended to make payments feel as natural as using a smartphone or smartwatch.
