Saudi Arabia has secured the rights to host the 57th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in 2027, a significant move that highlights the Kingdom’s ambition to position itself as a key destination for global scientific and academic events. The decision was confirmed by the IPhO International Board during the competition’s 56th edition in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

Building a Scientific Event Powerhouse

This announcement is the latest in a string of high-profile academic competitions awarded to the Kingdom, reinforcing its growing reputation for organizing large-scale international events. The win builds on a consistent track record, creating a multi-year calendar of scientific gatherings aimed at nurturing young talent.

In July 2024, Riyadh welcomed 333 students from 90 countries for the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad. This will be followed by Dhahran hosting the 25th Asian Physics Olympiad in May 2025, which is expected to attract 240 students from 30 countries. Further, the Kingdom is preparing to host the third International Nuclear Science Olympiad in Jeddah in August 2026.

Hosting IPhO 2027 is directly linked to the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Human Capability Development Program, which focus on creating a diversified, knowledge- and innovation-driven economy.
