Starlink has received an official licence to operate in Iraq, opening the way for the satellite internet provider to enter the Iraqi market.
The licence was signed during a ceremony at the American Chamber of Commerce in the United States, attended by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, according to Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC).
Baligh Abu Kalal, the commission’s executive director, signed the authorisation. The CMC said the licence is part of efforts to regulate satellite internet services under an approved legal and regulatory framework, while supporting digital sovereignty and keeping pace with global developments in the sector.
The commission said Starlink’s entry is expected to expand internet service options in Iraq, particularly in areas that require advanced technical solutions. It also linked the move to the country’s wider digital transformation efforts.
