Syria has officially joined the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), marking a new step in its efforts to develop the digital economy and modernize its technology sector.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Salam Haykal announced the membership after signing the organization’s charter alongside DCO Secretary-General Deemah Al Yahya. The signing took place in the presence of Mohsen Mehbash, chargé d’affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Riyadh.
Haykal said Syria would take an active role in the DCO to support national digital growth and expand cooperation with member states. He also highlighted the organization’s recent visit to Damascus to review the ministry’s plans for developing the telecommunications and technology sectors.
The move follows a cooperation agreement signed by Haykal and the DCO in Riyadh on September 1. The agreement covers digital transformation, infrastructure development, technical cooperation and the exchange of expertise.
Established in 2020 by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Pakistan, the Riyadh-headquartered DCO focuses on inclusive digital economic growth and supporting individuals and businesses globally.
