Syria Launches Touristech Initiative at Aleppo Citadel with Six Digital Stations

Syria has launched Touristech, a national initiative using digital tools to create interactive tourism experiences, with the Aleppo Citadel selected as its first site.

The project lets visitors explore the citadel’s 5,000-year history through six digital stations linked by QR codes. The stations provide access to historical photographs, archaeological maps and other content, without requiring electrical wiring inside the archaeological structure.

Aleppo-founded software and AI company Raizer is developing an online platform and open digital archive for visitors, researchers and schools. The initiative also includes training for 20 young guides, supported by a standardised guidebook created with historians.

More content will be added through “Aleppo Tells Its Story,” a programme featuring public sessions with historians and academics. These sessions will be recorded and published online.

The launch included a standard operating procedures guide designed to help adapt the model for other tourism and heritage sites across Syria. According to the announcement, the framework aims to connect heritage visits with local hotels, restaurants, markets, guides and artisans.

Tourism Minister Mazen Al-Salhani invited Syrian, regional and international companies working in technology, digitisation, artificial intelligence and content development to contribute to the initiative’s next phase. The launch also marked the start of “Aleppo Tourism Season,” organised with local tourism companies and agencies.
